Docent Tour: Become an expert on native plants using iNaturalist

Instructor
Carolyn Chaney
Location
Santa Barbara Botanic Garden
Date
September 19, 2022
Time
11:00AM
Details:

In this 1-hour tour, we will learn to use iNaturalist, a fabulous tool for identifying plants, insects, birds, and all things natural. Bring your smartphone (with a built-in camera).  If you can, please upload iNaturalist from your “app” store…it is free.  Once we have loaded the app, we will learn how to use it and then stroll the garden learning about plants we don’t know. Our kids and grandkids will think we are genius biologists! Plus we can become part of a vast worldwide network of citizen scientists.

About Carolyn Chaney:

I relish greeting our members and guests from all over the world at the Garden entrance, directing kids of all ages to the Backcountry, and answering questions about our fabulous native plants.  I love the natural world and am happy to teach our visitors how to use iNaturalist, a phone app for citizen scientists.  In addition to volunteering at the Garden, I volunteer for Nature Track, taking school-aged children on nature hikes from Carpenteria to El Capitan.  Before moving to Goleta in 2020 I was a docent at Filoli Gardens and the San Mateo County Parks on the SF peninsula. And in my past life (before retirement) I was a professor at SFSU, where I taught in the Communication Department.  I am a beekeeper and love gardening and playing bridge.
